Dr. Paul Mathai
Professor
Department Of Pharmacology
Dr. Paul Mathai completed his MBBS in 2008 from Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical College, Kolenchery. Following his graduation, he worked as a freelance medical practitioner and later as a Junior Doctor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the same institution. His early clinical experience provided him with valuable insights into patient care and the practical challenges of clinical medicine. He subsequently pursued his MD in Pharmacology at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore.
After completing his postgraduate training, Dr. Mathai joined Abbott India Limited (AIL), a multinational pharmaceutical company, in 2015 as a Medical Science Liaison in the Metabolics division. His exemplary performance led to his promotion to Medical Advisor at Abbott’s headquarters in Mumbai, where he was responsible for the Vaccines Division.
In 2017, Dr. Mathai transitioned back to academia by joining Malabar Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (MMC) as an Assistant Professor in Pharmacology. Over the years, he has earned a reputation among his students for his unwavering commitment to high standards in medical education.
Dr. Mathai played a pivotal role in obtaining Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) recognition for MMC from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. Owing to his initiative and efforts, all five institutions under the Sree Anjaneya Medical Trust are now eligible to apply for ICMR-funded research grants.
He currently serves as the Principal Investigator of a multicentric randomized controlled trial (RCT) under the Safe and Rational Use of Medicines (SRUM) national task force of the ICMR, focusing on polypharmacy in geriatric patients—a study anticipated to make significant contributions to national healthcare policy concerning elderly care. In addition, Dr. Mathai serves as the Member Secretary of the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) at MMC. Under his leadership, the IEC successfully achieved recognition from both the Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO)—a testament to the committee’s adherence to national ethical standards and regulatory compliance.
Recently promoted to Professor in Pharmacology, Dr. Mathai continues to combine his expertise in teaching, research, and scientific leadership. He is presently collaborating with Dr. Raghava Varman Thampan, Senior Distinguished Scientist and former Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Trivandrum. Their ongoing research focuses on Estrogen Receptor Activation Factor (E-RAF), Non-Activated Estrogen Receptor (naER), and Co-Insulin—molecules that hold promise for significant and exciting advances in public health.
